People always ask me if as an instructor I go diving when I am not working, and the answes is YES. Any day is good for diving. Just because my job involves diving, an activity most only persue on their holidays or days off, doesn't mean I don't enjoy diving on my days off. It's great to go out there and just enjoy the day.
My friend Clint joined me on my day of just diving for fun. We had two amazing drift dives. For our first dive we jumped off near Palomas Buoy and head towards Turtle Bluffs. We sighted four white tip reef sharks at the large sand bottom cave and two others under the ledge as we headed away from the cave. We left the cave and headed towards the Bluff's turtle cleaning station. There were a few turtles surrounded by colorful tropicals performing their cleaning duties with their usual zeal. The most impressive sight for me today was the feeding frenzy. A school of black trigger fish were the largest group of diners at a feast of sergeant major eggs. The small yet abundant delicacy of purple eggs were being gobbled up by black trigger fish, milletseed butterfly fish, raccoon butterfly fish, and other small tropicals. It was frenzy of activity exploding with color. From there we motored up to the Sheraton Caverns area. We hung around the caverns for a while and then headed over to Plate Lunch. plate lunch consist of a series of pinnacles to explore. One of the pinnacles has a great small opening, almost cavelike, where you can find lots of lobsters. Too bad it's not lobster season yet.
It was great to have a day off just to dive for fun.
